Crackling noises permeated the air like the heat radiating from the flow, as 2,000-degree lava and much-cooler country rock made their thermal exchange. Countless multiples of this little flow paved over many square miles of the southeastern part of Hawaii’s Big Island for 35 years and change, creasing a “Lavaly Landscape“. The Kilauea East Rift Zone eruption responsible for this breakout occurred in over 60 major episodes (this was a very small part of 61g) from January 1983 to September 2018, ending about nine months after this shot.
