Mysteries, forever encrypted by abandonment and ultimately lost to time and the elements, still fill countless many old structures up and down the High Plains. My curiosity often is stoked most by small details in forlornly photogenic scenes like this, to wit: Why the screws only on two corners of the knob plate? Was this a rare micro-example of shoddy workmanship in old High Plains construction? Poverty-motivated hardware parsimony? Or were the screws later pilfered for another use?
