STEVE CORFIDISteve Corfidi is a lead forecaster at the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma. His captivation with the natural splendors of the atmosphere began as a young child in his hometown of Baltimore, through his intense interest in the dichotomously synthetic world of electrical lines and insulators. Peering curiously at the colors of insulator glass, then at the contrasting sky beyond, planted the seed for his career in meteorology and a lifelong devotion to storm and cloud photography. On film Steve specializes in optical effects and wide-angle scenery. He blends landscapes and skyscapes in color with a sweeping view reminiscent of pioneering monochrome photographers Adam Clark Vroman and Alfred Steiglitz. One of Steve's unique artistic assets is his uncanny ability to photograph grand sky scenes in the normally hazy, building- and tree-covered Baltimore/DC region. His awareness of favorable weather patterns and locales for outdoor photography in that area is unmatched, giving him the "inside knowledge" to document the unusual and vivid. He is, however, most at home in a wavy Great Plains wheat field, sculpted convective towers piercing the sky above and beyond. Steve's photographs have been published in Weatherwise, for which he has written several articles on sunset photography and outdoor lighting phenomena. This is his first foray into online imagery.
